Tartini Violin Sonata in minor ''Devil's Trill Sonata''

Classic Chillout
“One night I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I desired: my new servant anticipated my every wish. I had the idea of giving him my violin to see if he might play me some pretty tunes, but imagine my astonishment when I heard a sonata so unusual and so beautiful, performed with such mastery and intelligence, on a level I had never before conceived was possible. I was so overcome that I stopped breathing and woke up gasping. Immediately I seized my violin, hoping to recall some shred of what I had just heard; but in vain. The piece I then composed is without a doubt my best, and I still call it “The Devil’s Sonata,” but it falls so far short of the one that stunned me that I would have smashed my violin and given up music forever if I could but have possessed it.”

Crazy thing is Tartini said his version didn't even come close to the beauty of the version the devil played in his dream.

It's just me or the Devil's Trill sounds like the devil's story? Starts when he was an angel (00:00-08:36) and finish when God exiled him from the paradise and creates hell. In this part, also we can feel his envy, or maybe others feels, but not love anymore. (08:37- 12:48). The final part, is so intense... (12:47-16:30) could represent his pain and hate. (Sorry for the possibles errors in my writing , I'm Chilean and I speak spanish).

The story behind “Devil’s Trill” starts with a dream. Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he dreamed that The Devil appeared to him and asked to be his servant. At the end of their lessons Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill—the devil immediately began to play with such virtuosity that Tartini felt his breath taken away. When the composer awoke he immediately jotted down the sonata, desperately trying to recapture what he had heard in the dream. Despite the sonata being successful with his audiences, Tartini lamented that the piece was still far from what he had heard in his dream. What he had written was, in his own words: “so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever.”

@00:00 to @4:04 The dark hour has come for me to loose you because i cant keep fighting whats inside. Sorrow as to why he must be thinking like that. Lucifer begins to cry about why God doesn't love him anymore; his done his best to show it too him; feeling depressed; dissapointed; and a failure. @4:04 to @7:17 lucifer begins to go insane and starts mocking himself, god and humans, he is boastful that he can fix everything right again even before he starts the war; rejoicing that god will love him again. Begins to love God with an anger & rage of a thousand men. @7:17 to @8:36 Cries because he cant taste Gods love again. @8:36 Lucifer begins to go delirious in his thoughts shaking his voice and body out of fear, depression, anxiety, and a deep pain, knowing theirs no relieve for it. @9:41 to @11:41 his tears have turned into nothing and he must go in vain with his insanity, with his plans, to never reach the point of depression again. @11:41 to @12:48 One last depressing goodbye to the one he loved and cared most about. To the one that could make him feel like an innocent child again. @12:48 to @16:30 Lucifer runs steadfast to do his dirtywork. Has had enough of being what he is, has lost himself in his confusion, shows that he is still the best that nothing can overcome his grestness

The tritone—an augmented fourth (or, in jazz parlance, a flatted fifth)—is a difficult interval to sing and has often been regarded as having an ugly, uncanny, or even diabolical quality. Its use was forbidden in early ecclesiastical music, and early theorists called it diabolus in musica (“the devil in music”). But Tartini used it, for this very reason, in his Devil’s Trill Sonata for violin. Oliver Sacks - Musicophilia

here is what I hear separated by breaks in the line: at first everything is peaceful and easy but then dramatic and heavy take a minute to be sorry then back to being angry and confident and brash, then again take a minute to be mournful, again take some hype but this one is more controlled and restrained and at the same time you can hear the rage, frustration that leads into profound sorrow, who has time for that get moving have to move have to go okay now focus deep breath and think, got a plan time to go, this time it's much more contained and directed loosing focus loosing control everything is frantic and hectic it gets subdued can't subdue it embrace it use it, can't decide why can't I decide inward pain and rage very dramatic throwing yourself around before finally collapsing from exhaustion. ...why the fuck is the devil bi-polar as all get out?

The Devil has always had the best tunes; this has been known for centuries. Along with literature, theatre, and art, the xian church has always regarded music with great suspicion, when it wasn't completely under their strict and oppressive control. Satan is master of the violin and flute. 18th century Italian composer Giuseppe Tartini was inspired when Satan appeared to him in a dream. He heard Satan playing the violin. He said it was the most beautiful music he had ever heard. It was "indescribably beautiful." He immediately awoke and tried to write it down to copy it, but it never turned out the same way. He did the best he could to duplicate it. He published it and named it "The Devil's Trill." http://seethetruth.ucoz.ru/_ld/0/1_Joy_of_Satan.pdf

Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he had dreamed that the devil had appeared to him and had asked to be Tartini's servant. At the end of the lesson, Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill, which the devil began to play with virtuosity, delivering an intense and magnificent performance. So singularly beautiful and executed with such superior taste and precision, that the composer felt his breath taken away.[3] The complete story is told by Tartini himself in Lalande's Voyage d'un François en Italie: One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.

Tartini couldn't capture what he perceived because as one dreams they straddle the firmament or vail, sometimes dipping a toe into the infinite they're still submerged & bound in the limitations of our flesh and fears. Ill equipped to download the divine onto our earthly format, some are nonetheless blessed to catch a glimpse or even experience a vivid personal union with what some call God, a word that only points towards but cannot embody. That union still incomplete, some may feel cursed by such a blessing, frustrated in the realization of being in this world but not of this world. As mortals we don't see, or hear, things as they truly are, we see things as we are. Illusive limitations will cease to separate as we are not only the vessel but also the wine carried within, furthermore we are the divine lips of which we are received.

well this makes me want to sell my soul too, hello sir Satan pls take me on

For a song Satan supposedly played it has a lot of sad emotions to it, stuff you don't usually pin on the devil. Usually it's trickery, anger, pain, torture, mania etc. But the beginning of this composition made me feel extremely empathetic. Honestly I couldn't have pinned it as devilish if not for the lore, curse, history, and title.

Tartini was already a famous composer at his time, one night he had a dream where the devil played this song for him, and when he woke up he immediately tired to play it, this song right here is what he dreamed of, however he later said that what he compose is not even close to what he heard on his dream. Pretty amazing.

1:25 is my favourite part. The tenderness in the violin and the gentle lifting undertones really shine through in this version and create a sort of soft "child in mothers arms" feel for a moment before plunging back into the harsh sharp notes. Its so reprisentative. This is my favourite composition by far and in it i hear the struggle between man and emotion. Living and pain.

“Uma noite sonhei que tinha feito um pacto com o diabo, o qual se dispôs a me dar vantagens, em troca de minha alma. Meu novo conhecido antecipava meus desejos e os satisfazia. No sonho, intrigado em saber se o demônio realmente entendia de arte, tive a ideia de entregar-lhe meu violino para ver se ele sabia tocá-lo. Qual não foi meu espanto ao ouvir uma Sonata tão bela e insuperável, executada com tanta arte. Senti-me extasiado, transportado, encantado; a respiração falhou-me e despertei. Tomando meu violino, tentei reproduzir os sons que ouvira, mas foi tudo em vão. Pus-me então a compor uma peça – O Trilo do Diabo – que, embora seja a melhor que música que já escrevi, é muito medíocre perante a que ouvi no sonho”.

The whole theme of the piece soaks with it. Its the theme of someone who was cast down , looked as aberrant but in truth bears brilliance and knowledge , the weirdness within that each and one of us can't or dont want to embrace. the sweetest things are those that we cannot do. It's the tragedy of us not having fulfilled those dark wishes .
