“One night I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I desired: my new servant anticipated my every wish. I had the idea of giving him my violin to see if he might play me some pretty tunes, but imagine my astonishment when I heard a sonata so unusual and so beautiful, performed with such mastery and intelligence, on a level I had never before conceived was possible. I was so overcome that I stopped breathing and woke up gasping. Immediately I seized my violin, hoping to recall some shred of what I had just heard; but in vain. The piece I then composed is without a doubt my best, and I still call it “The Devil’s Sonata,” but it falls so far short of the one that stunned me that I would have smashed my violin and given up music forever if I could but have possessed it.”

Crazy thing is Tartini said his version didn't even come close to the beauty of the version the devil played in his dream.

If the devil can produce something beautiful like this,I don't really think he's that bad tbh.

The playing is otherworldly and at random times I keep coming back to this piece. But the story haunts me more than the actual piece itself also. It makes you wonder what he actually heard and what he saw in his dreams while the devil was playing.

Thank you for selling your soul so that we can appreciate a portion of what beauty you dreamed of. RIP Giuseppe Tartini.

The tritone—an augmented fourth (or, in jazz parlance, a flatted fifth)—is a difficult interval to sing and has often been regarded as having an ugly, uncanny, or even diabolical quality. Its use was forbidden in early ecclesiastical music, and early theorists called it diabolus in musica (“the devil in music”). But Tartini used it, for this very reason, in his Devil’s Trill Sonata for violin. Oliver Sacks - Musicophilia

The Devil Himself
1:25 is my favourite part. The tenderness in the violin and the gentle lifting undertones really shine through in this version and create a sort of soft "child in mothers arms" feel for a moment before plunging back into the harsh sharp notes. Its so reprisentative. This is my favourite composition by far and in it i hear the struggle between man and emotion. Living and pain.

The story behind “Devil’s Trill” starts with a dream. Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he dreamed that The Devil appeared to him and asked to be his servant. At the end of their lessons Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill—the devil immediately began to play with such virtuosity that Tartini felt his breath taken away. When the composer awoke he immediately jotted down the sonata, desperately trying to recapture what he had heard in the dream. Despite the sonata being successful with his audiences, Tartini lamented that the piece was still far from what he had heard in his dream. What he had written was, in his own words: “so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever.”

Tartini was already a famous composer at his time, one night he had a dream where the devil played this song for him, and when he woke up he immediately tired to play it, this song right here is what he dreamed of, however he later said that what he compose is not even close to what he heard on his dream. Pretty amazing.

How all of this was inspired by a dream is amazing. I've tried remembering music from my dreams but it never availed to anything even remotely comparable to a minute of this song. That ending is probably the best ending to a string piece I've ever heard in my life too.

I love how music history discribes new and ground breaking pieces. "And he then used the higher notes and 5 people caught fire". Like before the 20th century people are discribed to be so jumpy and scidish

here is what I hear separated by breaks in the line: at first everything is peaceful and easy but then dramatic and heavy take a minute to be sorry then back to being angry and confident and brash, then again take a minute to be mournful, again take some hype but this one is more controlled and restrained and at the same time you can hear the rage, frustration that leads into profound sorrow, who has time for that get moving have to move have to go okay now focus deep breath and think, got a plan time to go, this time it's much more contained and directed loosing focus loosing control everything is frantic and hectic it gets subdued can't subdue it embrace it use it, can't decide why can't I decide inward pain and rage very dramatic throwing yourself around before finally collapsing from exhaustion. ...why the fuck is the devil bi-polar as all get out?
