The Great Caruso, Ave Maria Gounod

1951, American Tenor Mario Lanza (Alfredo Cocozza Lanza) singing Ave Maria, in the film The Great Caruso.

Ian Carey
It is so good to read the positive remarks. before the internet we starved for the culture.   I enjoy many singers but Mario Lanza has always been the voice that could make a man cry. So beautiful a singing voice.
molarmama32
I had this version played at both my mother's funeral and my my younger brother's. There was not a dry eye in the church.
Ellen Coxon
nobody could even reach or surpass Mario - he was perfect. I saw him live and he was terrific. And gorgeous into the bargain!

one of my favorite songs of all time a great man great tenor he new how to sing it right.
Ian Fryer
Long before the three tenors there was Mario Lanza. His voice was amazing and i find it hard to imagine anyone this good again
Raymond Herbert
beautiful,the great Mario Lanza
P Arnold
Ave Maria; beautiful
GUSTAVO ELTON MORALES
Maria Grego
I love this, I first listened to this years ago with my grandad and it will always have a special place in my heart

Sorry but the young boy singing the solo is my father! It was not his voice it was a female singer and my dad lip synced the part. I'm sure you won't believe me but I swear it's true. He's 74 years old now and he plays wii tennis eveyday! Love you dad!
Piroska Racz
Gorgeous. Of course my favorite hymn
Anna Smith
Wonderful voice! Divine! Wonderful tenor, so much liveliness and talent. The italian gold voice.
Rosana Rodrigues
Uma raridade. Gratidão :)))

Fantastisch!

I saw this movie as a child of 5! What a great tenor...he and Caruso!
ursmue1937
By Emilio Iodice Professor of University and “Lover of grand voices” The great tenors each had qualities that are incomparable. No one can compare with Caruso, who was a baritone who became a tenor. Other classical performers like Gigli stay within a marvelous class of voices that are the standard for the students of today and tomorrow. Lanza was one who leaped beyond the standards and measures of amazing singers and established a new category that remains unmatched even today. If Caruso was the Michelangelo of opera, Lanza was the Caravaggio, Lanza created a new form of art and introduced the same elements of “shadows and light” that could produce works of unforgettable vividness. Both artists made an indelible mark in their field and left us a body of work that is still held in awe for beauty, power, clarity and eternal vitality. Such is the contribution of Mario Lanza to music. Weniger anzeigen

Sorry Mirel but Pavarotti was a strong and tall man and at the age of 15 he was probably as tall as Mario Lanza whereas obviously the boy in the video is 10 or 12 years old no more. He can't be Luciano Pavarotti.
Mirel Reznic
The boy from the choir is Lucianno Pavarotti in the age 15 and 6 month. I know is the original voice of Luciano because the vibrato of his voice even the voice changed with the age but the interpretation is 100% Luciano Pavarotti (RIP)
Meade Music
Yes, because Lanza's singing was unaffected and purely natural.
John Schofield
Still feel my heart full with religious devotion while listenign to Mario Lanza; he was long past away when saw for the first time this film, but it was then!!!, when I decided to be a pro tenor (I was 10 years old and was a fan of Tom Jones...but when saw mario Lanza singing this piece I said"Ah! that is what I call singing!!!).Thanks for sharing this wonderful moment for me!!!, Bravo!!!
roxalys mendez
Dear colleague, I sometimes either expressed operatic tenor, Corelli, Kraus Wunderlich, but believe me, Mario Lanza is in my heart my body and my soul, and I will follow you to death itself, from now on we will write, if you will let me in English,! my respects and blessings!
ursmue1937
Hi roxalys mendez. Please don't write in german, to avoid misunderstandings, two great Wunderlich fans, most active Lanza slanderers, to say bad things about . You can take my word for it. F.W. is great, but Mario exactly the same, i prefer Mario
roxalys mendez
roxalys mendez
Never missing a jerk.

what kind of sicko are you to spoil a great tenor and a great song to Our Lady
Gigi Insulana
ursmue1937
Vocally, the most popular crossover artist was tenor and film star Mario Lanza, Billboard's top ten, "The Loveliest Night of the Year" and "Because You're Mine." Five of Lanza's albums hit Number One on Billboard's pop album chart between 1951 and 1955. The Great Caruso was the first and to date is the only recording composed exclusively of operatic arias to reach Number One on the pop album charts.

Absoluut waar , de beste

Glad to see Jimmy Savile is not in the scene.

I love the way Mario Lanza sang. He put so much feeling into what ever he sang. He had a beautiful voice. I thank God that I can still see and hear him on youtube and in his movies.
ursmue1937
Linda Ronstadt, very great. I am awfully sorry, of course not comparable
Walter Lunt
i agree but listen to a great song by linda ronstadt called hay unos ojos u wont be disappointed

I remembered I saw this movie in Nathan theatre, Kowloon in 1952 at the age of 15.I grew to adore Mario Lanza and often imitated him yelling my lung out to the open. My neighbor said If I were in his communist high school, they would have made me a singer. What he did not realized was that I am ONLY a baritone, never could sing that high as Mario.Besides I am very poor in memorizing lyrics. But Mario Lanza brought me a very enjoyable youth, I loved THE GOOD OLD DAYS! When I was a boy soprano, I had a full soprano range with light natural vibrato - like the sound of this boy. But didn't I read (and maybe here) that the actual singer is a woman (with studio chorus) and the kids were brought in at the last minute from some church for the filming part?
I. Alanís

I got "The Great Caruso" movie for my mothers 86th birthday (May 14th 2011). I am GLAD I did. she just loved it straight away and went on to watch it virtually EVERY day. It was like medicine for her. (she was taken with Dementia December 2004) She was so bright band happy whilst watching Mario it was wonderful for her (and me). Ohhhh God, she died last July 2012. I miss her every day. I am afraid now to look at these videos that she loved. I miss her every day. God Bless Her & Mario Lanza.

You are so right!! A new generation needs to enjoy and understand his gifts. Mario Lanza was incomparable. He was unique. He was the greatest of tenors and greatest of popular singers. Most of all he brought a passion to his work that no one has achieved. A new book expresses it well, " A Kid from Philadelphia, Mario Lanza, the Voice of the Poets." It is made for his fans and also introduces him to young people who need to feel and experience what only Mario Lanza could give: passion.
molarmama32
True. as Maestro Lanza could emote, feel a piece of music and transcend it beyond mere art to the Divine.
molarmama32
Mario Lanza was brilliant in everything that he sang. he was not a sterile singer, but picked the raw emotion of a piece----------and made it work! RIP dear Maestro, Lanza!
bertelliish
Caruzo and Lanza the best ever...Pavrotti and others were mediocre compared to these two
John McElroy
There is no reason for disputes of that type. He is one of the greatest. They are also great. There are other good tenors. Enjoy the melody, the passion, the inspiration!!! They all have something to offer us! Great, unsurpassed melodies!
Robert Liang
Although I made a lot of comments on Mario but now I do feel it's time to ask our Mario's fans to tell those song lovers under 60, especially the younger generation they only know three tenors but Marion. Tell them Mario is not only the greatest tenor up to now but also a no.1 pop song singer in March 1951 per Billboard chart in the States! When the three tenors were singing Mario's English song - BECAUSE, you will find comparatively it's a mess/joke!
Margaret Brown
Always brings a tear to my eyes - the best recording of this by Mario Lanza I think.
MrFranzony
This is a boy singing. Anyone with some knowlegde should hear that. And he is possibly the best ever. A soprano could sing the same tones but it would be fuller.
ursmue1937
MARIO LANZA He had a fantastic voice--not just wonderful--a fantastic voice." - Praise for Lanza Luciano Pavarotti
ursmue1937
WAS HAT ESSEN UND TRINKEN MIT DER STIMME ZU TUN ? WARUM SIND DENN SO VIELE MENSCHEN SO FETT ? WEIL ALLE ZU VIEL ESSEN UND TRINKEN . ABER WAS DIE HALBE MENSCHHEIT MACHT, ODER NOCH MEHR, DARF LANZA NICHT ? IHR KOMMENTAR IST ABSOLUT VERBLÖDET.

WEN I WANT TO HEAR A VOICE WITH PERFECTION, I HEAR EVENTUELL CALLEJA. WEN I WANT TO HEAR A VOICE WITH THE GREATEST SINGING INSTRUMENT EVER BESTOWED ON A HUMAN BEING, THAN I HEAR MARIO LANZA. the greatest singing instrument ever bestowed on a human being." - George London - ZITAT

Maraviglioso!!!
golden86
No, it isn't. Pavarotti was born in 1935. He would have been 16 when this film was made. Clearly the boy in the film isn't 16. He isn't even the one singing. The voice belongs to Soprano Jacqueline Allen.
gragrn
No its not, just one of those fake internet stories.
MrHbc3
If I had been completely correct you would not exist. Are you sure you are real? Did you move from Buffalo to South Philly? Or are you "the exception that proves the rule"? This is serious. Really.
Joseph Scibetta
MrHbc3: Guess I'm in the minority since I'm a Joseph who was born in Buffalo, N.Y.
MrHbc3
According to recent research 87% of active Mario Lanza fans are named Joe and of those Joes all live in South Philadelphia.
georgewu5
He was my teenage idol in 1953. when I was in my tenth grade. But I was only a baritone, not a tenor ! I was so frustrated to this date ! George Wu, Architect, A.I.A. 2013-4-6
